"Sanctuary" is an audio artwork created by Zakia Sewell, a DJ, writer, and broadcaster, as part of a commission by Chiswick House & Gardens. The piece was inspired by Sewell's family member's struggles with mental health and the history of Chiswick House as a progressive asylum in the 19th century. "Sanctuary" takes listeners on a journey through various layers of time, from the present-day natural environment recorded at Chiswick House & Gardens to readings of letters of residents during the House's life as an asylum. With a focus on creating a sense of wonder and drama, Sewell uses anecdotal personal stories to give voice to unheard narratives and offer a space for contemplation and reflection on the theme of sanctuary.
